Moments with God

Moments with God, March 9

1 Peter 2:21-23 (NIV) 21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.  22 “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” 23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.  1 Peter 2:21 (NIV) For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps….

Every day we read of people who seek to get even for a slight, an offense, or a disagreement.  A TV host is fired for a wrong statement.  An actor is fired because of her view on the present administration.  A family member disowns a sibling because the sibling voted for the “wrong” candidate.  Teachers are reprimanded for using the wrong word or pronoun by mistake.  “Cancel culture” has become the new phrase that permeates every aspect of our lives.  We find Christians retaliating against other Christians because of different approaches to addressing social issues.  Getting even seems to be the predominate course of action.

Again, we are reminded that we, as followers of Jesus Christ and believes of His Word, are not of this world.  Jesus prayed that over us as He prayed for the Father to protect us.  Therefore, we are not to adopt the ways of the world no matter how the world treats us.  Jesus set the example for us by coming to this earth in the flesh and by suffering the temptations and persecutions we will face.  Peter tells us that Jesus was insulted in ways some of us will never experience.  Yet, He did not retaliate.  He suffered ridicule, curses, and physical torture; yet, again, He made no threats for revenge.  Jesus set the example that no matter what the world throws at us, we are to return Jesus to the world.  That is impossible for us to do without the leading and power of the Holy Spirit because our flesh wants revenge.  However, the Spirit wants Jesus.  The persecution about which we have read for so long is upon us.  Jesus has prepared us.  He has shown us the Way.  He has given us His Holy Spirit.  We are prepared to be peacemakers.
